A Video-On-Demand service provides subscribers with a set of videos and sends a specific video to customers upon request through the network such as Cable network and IP network. Both the market requirement and technical evolution have made it a hot point in the future trends. To share the VOD resource between IP network and cable network, an effect and scalable VOD system should be designed among the Multi-architecture networks. In order to design such a VOD system, one of the most important issues is to providing the VCR functions in reply to the customers' request. However, it's known that it's still a challenge to realize VCR function in the multicast network, i.e. in Cable network. In this paper, we propose a scheme jointly adaptive buffer management in client and compensation channel service from server to support VCR functions. This scheme fully exploits the property of the cable multicast network so that the system bandwidth capability can be completely utilized. Incorporation with this VCR scheme, the VOD system not only provides a delay insensitive but handles all the interactive requests. Meanwhile, it is particular feasible for the large-scale VOD system which needs a robust support for great amount of users. Simulation results demonstrate that this joint scheme outperforms the traditional systems. It's found that 20 broadcasting channels and 10 compensating channels are efficient to support on 120 customers for a single video with less than one second setup delay and all types of VCR functions. This dissertation is organized as following. In Section 1, the technical background and a general introduction to the dissertation is given. Section 2 overviews the VOD system and a Cable network upgrading scheme is developed. In Section 3, Next generation VOD system is prospected. And in section 4, an efficient VCR scheme is proposed. Evaluation and simulation to this scheme is in Section 5. Finally, all the research and design are concluded in Section 6.
