Along with the rapid development of information technology, digital multimedia processing technology has been widely used in areas such as industrial, military, medicine, consumer electronics and security. At present, there are dissimilar solutions in digital multimedia system: some based on x86 CPUs, some based on embedded processors, some based on specifical ASIC chips and some based on DSPs. With its sound expandability, excellent flexibility and easy-maintenance, the DSP solution is becoming a hot topic.By researching the development of current digital multimedia processing technology, a Multimedia Decoding solution based on PCI Bus and TI's TMS320DM642 is proposed and implemented. This solution has several advantages. The powerful data processing and handling capabilities of DM642 guarantees the realization of a real-time system which is the linchpin of a digital multimedia processing system. Benefited from the universal use of high-speed PCI bus,DM642 solution can be easily applied to different platforms. The DSP's nature of working through software ensures that this decoder can be upgraded at any time to using the most advanced multimedia processing algorithm.On researching Multimedia Decoder's architecture, the principle and the process of this decoder's hardware are expatiated; the decoder's Schematic and high-speed PCB design are implemented. In software design, the realization of DSP/BIOS driver and the WDM PCI device driver based on PC and Windows 2000 platform is described. In the end are the conclusion and suggestions of further developing Multimedia Decoder, analysis of the deficiencies of this system, and the prospect of future digital multimedia processing systems'hardware architecture.
