The IP network brings us fire-new innovation in a many of fields for its low-cost and simple. It's a trend that the IP networks will certainly become the base network architecture of the next generation. As the Today the IP networks have made some attractive progresses, and meanwhile the TDM networks is becoming a past story. In this case transmitting synchronous TDM traffic through asynchronous IP network emerges as a hot topic. Now, a new technology named TDM over IP comes up to cope with these trends. TDM over IP well supports the transparent transmission of TDM traffic from the IP network. Compares with traditional telegraphic technology, the advantage of TDM over IP is its cost and bandwidth efficiency.This dissertation introduces the development of TDM over IP technology, explains the value of this technology. Then principles of TDM over IP Gateway are well explained, including encapsulation,synchronization and the quality of service. Then a outstanding TDM over IP system named MX2000 is been introduced, including hardware and software configuration,architecture and applications. Finally we validate its performance by the actual test platform.
