Manufacturing Execution System (MES) is located between the planning layer and the workshop control layer of the enterprise, and is a kind of shop floor-oriented production management technology and a real-time information system. It aims to integrate the production process and manufacturing resources so as to manage them effectively. As an important part of production management, material management needs a unified and effective method of tracking and management in MES. Focus on the material management in MES for the low volume and multi-products assembly production enterprise, in this thesis, a material management model is proposed and the technology of Work-In-Process (WIP) tracking and management is studied. A material management information system for assembly production MES is developed and applied successfully in the background enterprise.Firstly, an overview on MES and material management and the analysis of the status and requirements in the material management for an assembly production enterprise are made. The material management model is put forward, using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and MES ideas.Secondly, the technology of factory level material inventory management is investigated; the fuzzy judgments-based multi–level material classification method and various material management models are proposed. Then the management technology of material picking from the warehouse based on the priority rules is introduced. Moreover, the practicability and effectivity of the proposed management methods are validated through practical examples.Thirdly, the method of shop level material management is addressed, and the template-based model and method of configurable assembly process are presented in the thesis. Based on these, Engineering BOM (EBOM) and Process Planning BOM (PPBOM) are constructed, the BOM of the multi-view mapping are modeled, and the technology of converting EBOM and PPBOM to Manufacturing BOM (MBOM) is implemented. WIP tracking and management is realized by using data acquisition technology. Then three tracking methods, which are based on the tracking BOM, the batch management and the tracking sheets, respectively, are put forward. In addition, the practicability and effectivity of the proposed management methods are also validated through practical examples.Finally, a material management information system for assembly production MES is developed, which includes the following functions: basic information maintenance, material inventory management, material tracking and statistics and analysis etc. Moreover, the system has been applied successfully in the background enterprise.
