On the basis of analyzing the application of traditional genetic algorithms in the active power dispatch, discovered the weakness of it in constraints-handling using penalty functions ,in confirming fitness function and in local search, this paper puts forward a improved method—direct comparison-proportional method , and also builds a improved genetic algorithms which is the combination of hill-climbing algorithm and it for solving active power dispatch problem, and makes some experimental computations.The computational results demonstrate that the improved genetic algorithms can overcome the weakness of traditional genetic algorithms to a certain extent,so the high quality solutions to the active power dispatch problem can be obtained.
