Research On Chinese Electronics And Communication Industrial Cluster In Global Value Chains

The integration of global economy and international division of labour are speeding up the forming and developing of Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters. For example, Chinese Electronics & Communication industrial clusters in Changjiang Delta, Zhujian Delta and Bohai coastal area have greatly stimulated economic increase, employment, export and industry upgrade for local region and the whole country. Facing the opportunity and challenge of globalization, Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters need to join global production system dominated by MNCs and seek for innovation and upgrade. Global value chains theory is a new way of thinking to participate in global competition for local industrial clusters.This thesis adopts several research methods: systemic analysis, theoretical and quantitative analysis etc.. First, it builds a theoretical framework of analysis by summing up global value chains theories and industrial cluster theories.Then, using Centralization Ratio, HHI, N and GINI indicators, it investigates on the present situation of the space development and centralization of Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters, and analyzes the status of the development and the domains of the advantages of the first three big Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters. Furthermore, putting Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters into the theoretical framework of analysis of global value chains, it discusses its development mechanism from the angle of value source, location of industrial clusters in global value chains, driving power of the value chains, governance pattern, governor and etc. The result of analysis indicates that Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters locate in the link of processing & producing in global value chains, that the forming of industrial clusters is driven by foreign and domestic investments with producer-driven and buyer-driven models existing together and that the local industrial clusters embed into captive value chains with the upgrading path being uncertain. Chinese electronics & communication industrial clusters should join the global value chains to form cooperative development network mainly through processing and producing link from a middle and short-term point of view and thus to realize ladderlike upgrade from OEM, ODM, to OBM from a long-term point of view. Finally, based on the above result of analysis, some measures and suggestions are made from three aspects: nation, region and enterprises.
