Based on the theory of strategic trade policy, the paper recalls the history of theJapan-U.S. trade frictions, analyses the relationship between the application of strategic tradepolicies and trade frictions, and uses the case of Japan-U.S. trade friction for vehicle toexplain the relationship in addition. Finally it raises some points on the application ofstrategic trade policy in China. Through the above analysis, we can conclude that: Thestrategic trade policy which Japan implemented continuously is the fuse and importantreasons of the friction between Japan and United States, and for easing the trade frictions,Japan and U.S. have all changed their trade policies. Therefore, with the experiences andlessons learned by Japan and U.S., China should make the appropriate use of strategic tradepolicy in order to achieve the rapid and sustained economic development under the frame ofWTO.The whole paper is divided into four chapters: The first chapter introduces the theory ofstrategic trade policy. The second chapter analyses the relationship between the application ofstrategic trade policy and the Japan-U.S. trade frictions. The third chapter presents a casestudy of automobile manufacturing industry. The fourth chapter illustrates the relevantenlightenment of applying the strategic trade policy to China.
