The needs of the knowledge workers have already show the diversified and dynamic trends. The simplex and hidebound compensation system isn't as attractive as before. In light of the concept of cafeteria compensation, i.e. emplyees' different preference for compensation factors, which is based on 10 kinds of different compensation factors of cafeteria compensation brought by John .E. Tropman. It also tries to inquire the differences and features of preference for knowledge workers' compensation factors, and suggests their combination models lying down a foundation to design the cafeteria compensation. Concerning the demonstration research, the hi-tech companies in Dalian are the samples.The main conclusions are as below:1. The combination models of knowledge workers' compensation factors preferences reflects their choices, in which the most typical compensation models are Type A (family-oriented security). Type B (family-oriented risk), Type C (career-development risk) and Type D (career-development security).The various backgrounds will have an impact on their choice of combination models.2. Knowledge workers' cafeteria compensation factors can be divided in eight catalogues;they are base pay, short-term incentive compensation, long-term incentive compensation. benefits, accessional pay, career development pay, life quality Pay and special holiday pay.3. Based upon the preference theory and effect theory, it discusses the principles to design the cafeteria compensation system by using the non-difference curve. It is emphasized that the design of compensation system must consider the two constraint conditions, the labor cost and the employee's capability.4. This article analyzes the implementation procedure of the cafeteria compensation model, existing issues and the propositional resolution.
