Traditionally, mix use is a natural state in urban build-up area, although it hasgenerally been taken as a kind of perfection of urban land use. However, since 1990sin our country, problems aroused in the process of large scale development andconstructions have put forward challenges to the planning management of whichfunction distribution is being as guideline.Under these backgrounds, this thesis has studied the application rules ofmixed-use development in PUD, as a new way of land use. That means howmixed-use activities in PUD succeed in practical projects' planning and development. It also puts forward some suggestions to the development in present China. Just as away of land use, mixed-use development is not one strict planning theory. So thisthesis goes with the method of the theoretical research combining with case study. The thesis is divided into two parts: theoretical research and case studies. Thetheoretical research part begins with some basic problems of MXD, such as scale, useand mix etc. Then it introduces MXDs' essential feature, physical configuration and aseries of question of its planning and development. Finally, it analyses the guideaction of local governments to MXDs.The cases studies part at first investigates into the problem and their reasons inthe development of Tiantongyuan and Huilongguan communities, to illustrate the badoutcome due to lack of MXD. Then through two foreign successful cases —IllinoisCenter and Granville Island redevelopment, and the domestic case of West-area ofZhongguancun, it shows particularly this developing approach's application indifferent situations of developmentFinally, it reviews the prospect of mix use in PUD in Chinese constructions.Based on the analysis on the possible guide action of local government, it provideswith several suggestions to current status of Chinese cities.
