This paper is to study the historical roots of Sarton’s new humanism. According to the domesticrelated literature, domestic researches on this issue are relatively weak. And this problem has importanttheoretical significance and practical significance, for solving the growing divide between science andhumanities. Since the Renaissance, the rise and development of humanism has paved the way for the ideasin the development of science, and also laid the foundation for the rapid development of science. The rapidrise and rapid development of science inevitably stimulate the other areas, especially in the late19thcentury humanism. The rise of science and scientific achievements of inappropriate use of traditionalhumanism, which led to the crisis of traditional humanism. In this context, Sarton’s new humanism is inorder to solve the schism between science and humanities and antagonistic. This article attempts to clarifyhow old humanism in Sarton sense transform to the new humanism, in particular, discussing therelationship between the humanities and science as the main clue.This paper has two parts: the introduction and the main body. The introduction introduces thesignificance of Sarton’s new humanistic and research status at home and abroad, and insists that althoughthere are some studies at home and abroad about Sarton’s new humanistic thought, but there are few studiesabout the system of carding the historical roots of it. This needs more system combing Sarton’s historicalroots of the new humanism.The Body is composed of three parts. The first part introduces the main content of the Sarton’snew humanism. By discussing Sarton’s new humanism can distinguish Sutton’s new humanism andhistorical humanism clearly. Through discussion we obtained: Sarton’s new humanism has superiorityrelative to historical humanism.The second part of the article mainly discusses the historical roots of the Sarton’s new humanism.and it is also the focus of this article. Research has shown that Sarton’s new humanism appears after thescience and the humanity of romantic gradually splits. We can discuss from the Renaissance, the scientificrevolution and the enlightenment, the French romantic period and the period of the revolution of newscience, the relationship between science and humanities, to draw why Sarton’s new humanism appears and what kind of social background of it. Through the analysis of the timeliness, It is not difficult to find thatwe want to trace the historical roots of the Sarton’s new humanism in such a clue. And analysis of theabove background, We can find that historical humanism will not be able to adapt to the development of thesociety, and how to transform of new humanism.The third part mainly discuss the meaning of the Sarton’s new humanism. From the secondchapter discuss we have funded Historical significance of the Sarton’s new humanism, which don’tunderstand each other between scientism and humanism. Nevertheless, our contemporary society theschism between science and humanist did not improve, which more and more seriously. Our contemporarysocial divisions bigger problems of Genetically modified, ecological environment,world Wars and so on.We study the new humanism of Sarton to heal and solve these problems has a certain practical significance.
