As air breakdown is an important subject in the field of high power wave electromagnetics and has a wide use, it has attracted more and more concerns. This paper first takes deep into the subject with a model of Maxwell Equations and a fluid equation, and solves the model using finite time domain method (FDTD). Then a discussion of some key parameters such as ionization frequency, attachment frequency and recombination comes after that. Effects of electric field, pulse width on breakdown is discussed following with verification of the reliability and the stability of the algorithm and some conclusions from the simulation.A theoretical analysis air breakdown comes first at the beginning of this article And then theory model in a group of Maxwell equations and a fluid equation is presented. After that, the deduction in finite time domain method turns the model into a group of difference equations.Air breakdown has much to do with air pressure, temperature and especially the density of the free electricity in the air itself. What’s more, it also connected with the amplitude, frequency of the EM wave and the width of the high power wave pulse. An expanding of the use of ionization formulas base on some given research is proposed by comparison of ionization formulas.Numerical model for simulation of air breakdown is discussed right after a theory model and the features of air breakdown. Basic technique and procedure of numerical simulation after that. And then characters and numerical calculating methods of the main coefficients are introduced. The reliability and the stability of the simulation is discussed in detail with some computation examples and experimental data at the end of the paper.
