Research On The Application Of Court Dress Elements Of The Flourishing Tang Dynasty In Modern Dress Design

Since the21st century, the traditional Chinese style clothing can be seeneverywhere, no matter on the T-stage leading the fashion trend or the urban streetfilled with life breath. The dignified and elegant aesthetic feeling of Chinese womenis shown richly from the whole dress to fine decoration. The Tang Dynasty is theheyday of culture and art development in Chinese history, and the dress culture haddistinct characteristics of the times. During that flourishing period, court dress wasshown with gorgeous and elegant feeling, and left profound cultural elements with itsfurther development for later ages. The extensive influence and group awareness stillexist now. In this paper, characteristics of court dress elements during the flourishingTang Dynasty were discussed. The inherited and innovative applications of them inmodern dress design were researched as well. These researches provide muchvaluable theory references for the modern dress design and industrial development.This paper mainly focuses on the following three aspects.1. Chinese theme dress on international shows recent years are reviewed, and theapplications of traditional elements in modern dress design are simply stated,then analysis is conducted between its different application at home and abroad.2. The elements characteristics of the court dress in the flourishing Tang Dynastyare also analyzed and concluded from the aspects including color, pattern, fabric,process and style.3. The applications and innovations of the flourishing Tang Dynasty court dresselements on the modern dress design are analyzed in detail. Further exampleillustrations are provided for modern Chinese theme dress in the graduationdesign. And the following conclusions are obtained.(1) In style respect, the modern fashion design is going on towards diversifieddevelopment. And modern designers always do much imitation and innovationbased on many historical classics dress styles as “master plate”. The Ru skirtstyles of the flourishing Tang Dynasty are still fashionable in modern times, forexample, the Bohemian dress is under its high waist and flat collar characteristics. The short-sleeves styles are more common nowadays, which can be innovatedfrom the sleeves style and collar style in modern dress.(2) In color respect, the traditional color needs to be reconstructed in innovativeapplications of modern fashion design. One method is weakening the intuitivevisual color and starting with the dress pattern and color sense. Then achieve thecolor design by the dress material change. Another method is combining thetraditional color and modern color. They mutually blend while standdistinguishing to each other on the dress pattern. The Chinese traditional colorand modern clothing color can be set as the main body color and decoration colorrespectively, which is another way to make integral color richer.(3) In pattern respect, realistic plant flowers and birds pattern hold the main streamduring that period. These characters give people some national and traditionalfeeling. Nowadays, clothing style tends to be more diversified, so repetition andsegmentation or other design methods can be used to reprocess and redesigntraditional patterns to make them present different style. Making a clear designposition is the determinant factor of this kind of clothes.(4) In embroidery decoration respect, it is generally applied in the prominent positionof the clothing when designing the traditional dress. The embroidery decorationscould be tried to put in waist line, shoulder, elbow and other unexpected places inthe innovation of modern dress, and other measures such as mutual adjustmentamong clothing style, color and pattern can also help to accomplish the design.What’s more, segmenting the embroidery patterns by inner cut-off rule can makeclothing more clear and concise.In a word, characteristics of court dress element during the flourishing TangDynasty are discussed in this paper. Based on dress design examples at home andabroad recent years and own innovative design practice, the inheritance andinnovation of these elements in modern dress design is researched into as well. Theseresearches not only provide theory references for the modern Chinese theme fashiondesign, but also provide much abundant theoretical values to Chinese modern dressdesign and development of industry, which has profound significance.
