In the Chinese civilization which has thousands of years’ history, Chinese traditionalpatterns are the accumulation of traditional culture and national spirit. As an integral part ofChinese traditional culture, Chinese traditional pattern has a long history and it is also verycolorful. From the ancient totem and painted pottery art to the development of today’straditional auspicious patterns, cloud-pattern appears in the various fields of social life as anrepresentative of Chinese traditional pattern. Not only cloud-pattern has a unique artisticmodelling, but also it is bearing the Chinese traditional culture. It has rich symbolic meanings,and it expresses the people’s yearning and pursuit of happy life. Cloud-pattern has thecharacteristics of space and nationality which are the basic factors of its vitality.In this paper, the research based on the basic facts of Chinese cloud-pattern, theapplication in modern clothing design, the innovative application in modern dress and thecontemporary value and marketing value of modern dress. The cloud-pattern survey based onthe historical and cultural background, the development and the application of clothing design.It has a further study for the development and application of the cloud pattern in the moderndress. Cloud-pattern has carried on the practice of the innovative application in modern dressdesign. It’s mainly from the shape, color, material and techniques to analyze the application ofcloud-pattern in modern dress design. The transformation of the shape of cloud-pattern makesit has a form aesthetic feeling. In the moiré color, it breaks the traditional decorative colorsystem, and integrates into the modern fashion color, so it’s better to show national andfashionable moiré. For the material, we use the woven fabrics, beads, silk satin andtransparent yarn fabric etc in the dress design. It combined with modern embroidery, stereoembroidery to show cloud patterns state of dress design. This paper focuses on the analysis ofthe spiritual elements of traditional patterns and the combination of modern dress design. Itcombined with modern ideas, and on the basic of protecting the fresh cloud-pattern. Thecloud-pattern is now full of new vitality, and it has the new characteristics. So it provides a new theoretical background and practical basis for innovative applications in modern dressdesign of cloud patterns.
