Though nitrile rubber is one kind of low production rubber, it is widely used in themanufacture of various oil resistant gasket, rubber hose, aircraft fuel tank, flexible packaging,printing rubber roller and adhesive, owing to good oil resistance, benzene resistance, heatresistance and good mechanical properties. As one kind of special engineering plastic,polyphenylene sulfide possesses excellent heat resistance, flame retardant properties,mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, dimensional stability, frictional resistance andelectrical insulation properties. It has been widely used in the fields of aerospace, military,automobile, computer, electronics, electrical appliances, electrical, mechanical, chemical, lightindustry etc. With the addition of polyphenylene sulfide into nitrile rubber matrix, themechanical properties, solvent resistance, chemical resistance and electrical insulationproperties of nitrile rubber can be improved significantly.This paper firstly studied the blends of different proportion of polyphenylene sulfide andnitrile rubber with reinforcing by carbon black. According to the changes of mechanicalproperties, abrasion resistance, oil resistance and methanol resistance of composites, theoptimum adding amount of polyphenylene sulfide resin was obtained. Morecver, the effect ofcompatibility of AlCl3and chlorinated polyethylene on NBR/PPS blend system was studiedand the the amount of AlCl3and chlorinated polyethylene were determined without adding thereinforcing agent of carbon black. At last, we studied the effect of carbon black feeding amonton the the mechanical properties, abrasion resistance, oil resistance and methanol resistance ofcomposites with fixed amount of polyphenylene sulfide, AlCl3and chlorinated polyethylene.The tensile strength, elongation at break, tear strength and abrasion of the compositesgradually decrease with concentration of polyphenylene sulfide increased, while the modulus at100%and hardness increase when polyphenylene sulfide and nitrile rubber are blended directly,But the oil and methanol resistance ability of composite can be increased with increasing theamount of PPS and finally reached to an approximate equilibrium value. Blends of polyphenylene sulfide with nitrile rubber and without addition of carbon blackwere investigated. It was found that the polyphenylene sulfide powder has a reinforcing effecton the nitrile rubber with adding10phr PPS, the tensile strength of the blend increase70.8%,and tear strength increased by85.4%.Chlorinated polyethylene and AlCl3have the ability of synergistic compatibilization tocomposites of NBR/PPS.With adding3%polyethylene chloride and3%chlorideacrylonitrilebutadiene to the blends of NBR/PPS, the tensile strength, the modulus at100%and tearstrength increase to175.0%,206.2%and225.8%as comparion with nitrile rubber. Furthermodification of blends with filling by carbon black, it can be found that the mechanicalproperties, hardness, solvent resistance and abrasion resistance of the composite materials areimproved. As comparison with the standard samples of nitrile rubbe, the tensile strength wasincreased by16.3%; oil resistant, methanol volume expansionrate were decreased by13.06%and5.86%; shore hardness was increases by9A; the wear volume was reduced by9.79mg/g.
