Water quality safety relates to people’s daily life and production activity inevery industry. But with the development of economy in China, the productionactivities have caused water pollution in large areas; sewage also becomes animportant source of pollution from the city, so that the ecological environment andliving environment of people in China are suffering a great threat. So the real-timemonitoring for water quality is very important to water resource protection and waterpollution prevention.ZigBee technology is a new short distance wireless communication technologywhich is used to actualize wireless sensor networks. Its features include smalltransmission range, low data transfer rate, low power consumption, low cost, shorttime delay, big network capacity etc..Based on studying wireless sensor network technology and ZigBee protocol, thereal-time remote monitoring system for water quality is designed in this paper. A setof remote real-time monitoring system (including field monitoring equipments,monitoring and early warning software platform), which is based on ZigBee protocoland wireless sensor network technology, has been researched, designed, integrated,installed and tested in this paper. Effective real-time monitoring for the water quality,wireless transmission for monitoring data, the software platform (including datastorage, data display and remote control for the monitoring equipments) have beenactualized. The real-time monitoring equipments for water quality are effective asmonitoring system front-end; wireless sensor network, which is based on ZigBeeprotocol, consists of multiple monitoring equipment nodes; the main node connectsto management center through long-distance wireless transmission by the GPRS;monitoring equipments are equipped with solar power supply unit with powercontrol, so they can operate normally in field conditions without regular power; asmonitoring management center at the back-end, the water quality monitoring andearly warning software platform receives data from front-end monitoring equipments through the GPRS, then stores and manages data, shows data in various forms, earlywarn for water quality, remotely controls monitoring equipments etc..The Qingshan Lake in Nanchang City has been chosen as the experimental field forthe water quality monitoring system in this paper. Perfect and effective schemes havebeen researched, laid down and carried out for water quality monitoring andinstalling, deploying, protecting the equipments. Through researching and layingdown a scientific and reasonable testing scheme, the water quality monitoringsystem has been tested a period, and then improved and perfected. The soft andhardware systems passed the functional test in the field. The monitoring system canwork stably in the bad environment, acquire real-time monitoring data of waterquality and send the data to the monitoring center through the wireless network.Every target in this paper has been achieved. Maintenance scheme for water qualitymonitoring system also has been researched and laid down to ensure maintenance,improving and upgrading in the future.The remote real-time water quality monitoring system, which is researched anddesigned in this paper, applies wireless sensor network technology to real-timemonitoring for water quality of Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province. It has a veryimportant significance to provide effective real-time monitoring data for protectingPoyang Lake.
