The glass, ceramics and other non-conductive hard brittle materials have a lot of favorableproperties such as high hardness, wear resistance, good insulation etc. For this reason, they have beenwidely used in the fields of aviation, biomedicines and other high tech fields. ElectrochemicalDischarge Machining (ECDM) is an effective way in machining non-conductive materials such asglass, ceramics. It has the advantages of low cost, no macroscopic cutting force. In the paper, amethod of machining non-conductive hard brittle materials with ultrasonic vibration aided ECDM isproposed, the mechanism of ECDM and ultrasonic vibration are introduced, the effect of ultrasonicvibration on ECDM process is analyzed through the process experiments. The main contents are asfollows:(1)The principles of ECDM, the characteristics and mechanism of ultrasonic vibration areresearched. The experimental platform with suitable ultrasonic equipment is set up.(2)The drilling experiments are conducted with only one factor changing at a time. Theexperiments are conducted by changing the machining voltage, electrolyte concentration and thefrequency of ultrasonic vibration. Through analyzing the results of experiments, the impact rules ofultrasonic vibration on the size and circular degree of holes are obtained.(3)The principle of Electrochemical Milling is researched. The control software ofElectrochemical Discharge Milling is designed.(4)Through the experiment of powder-mixed Electrochemical Discharge Milling, the effectrules of ultrasonic vibration on the milling surface quality is researched. The experiments ofmachining ceramics and silicon wafer with ECDM are conducted, the feasibility of machiningceramics and silicon with ECDM is researched.
