Filtration efficiency and resistance are the most important criterions to value filter materials.Efficiency, determining whether the filtrated air could meet our requirement, can be used toclassify the degree of filters. Lower resistance causes lower inlet load in the filtration system, such reducing the operation cost. So high efficiency as well as low resistance is the inexorabletrend of the development of modern filters. Glass fiber not only has a small diameter whichcontributes to filter fine particles, but also has a high modulus keeping the resisstance low.The paper focuses on the influence of components of glass fiber air filter paper on filtrationperformance. Through researching from three diffierent points, it is aimed to offering somereference to the designation of the glass fiber filter paper.First, BET specific surface and SEM were compared to measure the diameter of the fiberused in the research. It turned out that the BET method had a considerable diviation amongthe multiple trials, while SEM method could offer intuitive datas of diameter as well as thediameter distribution. The fiber diameter of BX、BLM1、BLM2、BLM3、BLM4and BLM5from SEM was relatively7.00μm、2.61μm、1.02μm、0.66μm、0.62μm and0.43μm.Second, the influence of BLM diameter on the properties of filter paper was extensivelystudied by mixing chopped strand glass fiber with BLM of five different diameters. The resultshowed that when the diameter was lower than1.02μm, the paper thickness showed no moreobvious change while the quality factor could be raised up to more than11, thus optimizingthe filter performance. When choosing BLM3, and the content25%, the quality factor occurthe highest. Then, the influence of the content of BLM on the properties of filter paper wasextensively studied by varying the ratio of BLM. According to the result, the paper thicknesshad a larger value if the chopped strand or BLM dominated (70%or more). Rising the BLMcontent by15%from10%to100%,the paper penetration could reduce by more than60%,while the resistance showed almost liner relation with the BLM content. The quality factorturned out to drop after rise to the peak (at the content25%). Last, the influence of mixture of fiber on the filtration performance of filter paper wasstudied by classify all the samples according to efficiency. The result showed that in thecoarse C1degree, that was to say the efficiency lying between40%~60%, coarse frame andfiner filling should be used to reach a high quality factor; as to the Z3and G8degree, that wasto say the efficiency lying between80%~90%and95.5%~99.95%, besides coarse frame andfiner filling, another transition fiber, which had a moderate diameter, should be added tooptimize filtration performance.
