The buildings on the surface of the mineral gob may tilt or crack, because of surfacedeformation or collapse. With the rapid development of national economy, more and moreunderground mines are excavated, forming mineral gobs, especially gobs after exploitationof coal resources. Many industrial and civil engineering, transportation engineering andother constructions are built on old or new gobs and therefore the relevant departments areproposed a new and even unprecedented challenge. Hence, research on goaf surfacebuildings subsidence caused by gobs is particularly important, and has a practicalsignificance.On the background of surface building settlement accident of some coal preparationplant, this paper analyzes foundation deformation of one middling coal bin in this coalpreparation plant. Research conclusions are as follows.(1) By analyzing the accident of a middling coal bin in some preparation coal plant, aconclusion is reached that foundation deformation caused by mined-out area which formedin room and pillar mining as well as loose filled soil is the reason of surface buildingsettlement.(2) Boring and drilling both are difficult to perform in miscellaneous fill mainlycomposed of coal gangues, so outdoor apparent resistivity method is used to ascertain thethickness of such miscellaneous fill in this paper. By use of apparent resistivity method, it isfound that pole pitch and thickness of miscellaneous fill have linear relation. And therelational expression is obtained, with which thickness of miscellaneous fill can becalculated out. Through verification, this calculated number has high accuracy rate andrelative error is9.0%at most. Obtaining the thickness of miscellaneous fill is an importantbasis for calculating the valued of foundation deformation caused by miscellaneous fill.(3) This research proposes a new way to calculate the value of surface settlementcaused by room and pillar mining. It is assuming a coal pillar after mining as the pillar ofbuilding structure and overlying rock-soil layer as the girder and then obtaining the value ofsurface settlement by calculating deformation of the the girder.(4) In this research, a calculation model about surface settlement caused by ground proximity room and pillar mining is built. By use of ANSYS, the assumed structural modelis analyzed and then deformation deflection curve of the assumed girder is obtained, finallydeformation influence value of surface bulindings foundation caused by mined-out areaformed in the room and pillar mining is also obtained. The research result shows maxiumvalue of surface deformation caused by mined-out area is14.2cm.(5) With foundation deformation value of miscellaneous fill and the value of surfacesettlement caused by room and pillar mining, foundation deformation value of the middlingcoal bin is calculated out. It is15.8cm, which approaches to the actual investigated value,19.2cm. Accuracy rate reaches83.3%. This research result is practical and has importantreference value in engineering.
