Plant volatile compounds are secondary metabolites produced by plant metabolism process. Due to pharmacological of volatile compounds, volatile compounds have been widely used in clinic and health care application. Volatile compounds are also used for plant ecology and plant physiological activity studies. Changbai Mountain has unique geographical, bearing various species natural plants. Research on Changbai Mountain plants composition has important significance to the plant research and development. A great deal of studies on volatile composition has been reported, but because of the analytical methods limitation, semi-volatile compounds of the plants are often neglected. In this study, GP-MSE sample preparation method coupled with GC-MS were used to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze various species of medicinal plants from Changbai Mountain. As a result, hundreds of compounds were analyzed from11medicinal plants, the groups of the compounds covered terpenes, phenols, esters, acids, alcohols, anhydrides, alkanes and heterocyclic compounds. Chemical method combined with chemometrics method was applied to comparison of volatile and semi-volatile in different families, genuses, species and parts of the medicinal plants. In Compositae, Caprifoliaceae, Ericaceae, Rosaceae and Cupressaceae family medicinal plants, volatile and semi-volatile compounds have obvious differences, contain less common composition. In Rosaceae family Padus Mill.,Agrimonia, Rubus different genera plants, the compound species composition is different. In Rosaceous family three different genera plants, a total of128compounds were determined, of which had32common constituents, these compounds were more than65%of the total content. In Ginseng genus, Panaxnoto ginseng, Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius Linndifferent three species ginseng plants, there were85%common constituents, show high similarity, so could not distinguish by the GC chromatography, but combined with PCA, also can distinguish the three different species of the ginseng. The whole medicine plant Prunella vulgaris different parts chemical comparison showed, the volatile and semi-volatile compounds in four different parts were different, so in medicinal plants application, it is necessary to consider the different parts of the medicinal plants. In this study, the plant constituent study is extended to semi-volatile. The comparative study show, we can use the plants similarity and differences apply to plants simple classification, further for research unknown plants genetic relationship.
