Along with the development of oil exploitation, shipping and petroleum industry, the number of oil spilling accidents is increasing, and the pollution of oil spill becomeincreasingly serious. Therefore, the study of “oil fingerprint” of the spilled oil canprovide strong technical support for maritime departments to identify the sources ofcertain spilled oil.By using the method of GC-MS,12suspected spilled oil and4source samples have beencarried on qualitative and quantitative analysis. After this, we made use of the three methods(original fingerprint spectra, relative concentration distribution characteristics and characteristicratio) to do differential analysis respectively on different types of oil sample (fuel oil, diesel oil, lubricating oil) and mixed sample (bilge). What’s more, we did fuzzy clustering analysis on thesingle oil sample and mixed sample by using the fingerprint information.Researches show that significant difference exists between different types of sample, andthe differences of original fingerprint spectra are apparent among n-alkanes (including phytaneand basking shark alkane), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, terpene, steroid and other iconiccompounds. Therefore, we can identify the source of spilled oil quickly and effectively just bythe intuitive judgment. On the other hand, the difference is not significant among the oil sampleswhich have the same type but different model number, and the differences of original fingerprintspectra are not apparent among n-alkanes (including phytane and basking shark alkane),polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, terpene, steroid and other iconic compounds. So sourceidentification should be based on the relative content of components and characteristic ratios Theresearch also made the fuzzy clustering analysis on the fuel oil data of relative concentration andcharacteristic ratios separately, and compared the results with fuel oil’s original fingerprintchromatogram, relative concentration distribution characteristics and characteristic ratios. Afterdoing this, we found that it’s more reasonable to choose relative concentration parameters to doclustering analysis.By using the method of fuzzy clustering analysis to analyze the relative concentration ofboth single sample and mixed sample of spilled oil, it made the "closeness" relationship betweenthe oil source and the suspicious sample clear at a glance, and the results more intuitive, scientific and objective.
