In this article, a new kind of hydrophobic monomer named N-octyl acrylamide (C8AM)was synthesized by octylamine and acryloyl chloride. Using the redox system as the initiator,a hydrophobically associating biopolymer (acrylamide/octylacrylamide) P (AM-C8AM) wasprepared by using method of free radical micellar copolymerization. In this study, variousfactors which might effect on the hydrophobically associating water-soluble polymerincluding initiator dosage, reaction temperature, monomer concentration, hydrophobicmonomer content, additive dosage on molecule weight which were discussed. The resultsshowed that the dosage of initiator was0.01%; total monomer concentration was25%; theamount of urea was2%; the dosage of sodium formate was0.002%; ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium dosage of0.004%, which caused the temperature of15℃; thesuccessful synthesis of the hydrophobic associating acrylamide; the molecular weight was12.58million. Due to the hydrophobic monomer is present in the polymer, the Polymer ispoor water solubility. Before polymerization, hydrolysis is with anhydrous sodium carbonate.Meanwhile, apparent viscosity of the polymer solution was determined and its temperatureresistance and salt tolerance were studied. At80℃viscosity, it still can reach71.6mPa s,viscosity remains at a rate of58.35%. Moreover, comparisons of those traditionalhomopolymers were performed.We use dodecylamine and acryloyl chloride as raw materials. N-dodecyl acrylamide(C12AM), which is strong hydrophobic monomers, were synthesized in the research. Thechemical structure of hydrophobic monomers confirmed using FTIR. The hydrophobicallyassociated with polyacrylamide P (AM-C12AM-AMPS) was synthesized by the radicalmicellar polymerization in the aqueous media. In this polymerization acrylamide(AM) andthe hydrophobic monomer N-dodecyl acrylamide(C12AM), polar anionic monomer and2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid(AMPS) were synthesized. In the polymerization,it is selected the appropriate surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). It inspects theinfluences of initiator, functional monomer, pH, temperature and other factors of the polymermolecular weight. The results show that,AM,AMPS and hydrophobic monomer (C12AM)molar ratio was89.8%:0.2%:10%. The total monomer concentration was30%,the pH was8.0;the reaction temperature was15℃; the amount of AIBA was0.01%;the initiator was0.015%;the amount of urea was2%; the relative molecular mass was15.04million. We investigatedthe temperature and salt resistance properties of hydrophobically associated topolyacrylamide. At80℃viscosity can reach113.1mPa s and the viscosity retention rate was 75.2%. The study of anti-salt performance shows that, compared to hydrophobic associationpolyacrylamide with partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide has good salt tolerance,andviscosity remains at a rate of75.20%.In addition, compared with Na+,the effect of Ca2+on theapparent viscosity of the hydrophobically associating polyacrylamide was more significant.
