With the rapid development of C hina’s industry and agriculture, the pollution of environment is more and more serious. In order to gain a sustainable development, how to treat the waste water is now the most important problem. Flocculant can be sued in the most waste water treatment, and it’s also the key and basis of flocculation technology. Modified polyacrylamide(MPAM) was synthesized by acrylamide(AM) and other special monomer,and MPAM has been applied in oil discovery,sewage and industrial waste water fields. The researchers at home and abroad pay attention on the study of MPAM.The article uses the methacryloyloxy ethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride(DMC), acrylamide(AM) and butyl methacrylate(BMA) as monomers, uses redox initiator system ammonium persulfate and sodium bisulfite, adding a surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, in the aqueous phase polymerize the hydrophobically modified cationic polyacrylamide P(AM-DMC-BMA).The effects of experimental factors on the molecular weight of the P(AM-DMC-BMA) were studied, such as amount of initiator, amount of all monomer, initiation temperature, amount of BMA, amount of surfactant. Using the orthogonal experimental design to make sure the best way to get the highest molecular weight of P(AM-DMC-BMA). The structure of products’ characteristic by Fourier transform Infra-Red.The P(AM-DMC-BMA) and PAM were used to treat waste water in the same situation, which was simulated by kaolin. The effects of concentration factors including the molecular weight, the amount of polymer, p H, stirring time and the amount cation on polymer.The results show that: in the single factor experiment, the effect of initiator concentration on the polymerization reaction is large, when the it reaches 0.6ml the polymerization is best; and with the increasing of reaction temperature and hydrophobic monomer, the reaction product of molecular weight and cationic degree will increase then decrease, when the hydrophobic monomer dosage is 3g and the reaction temperature is 45 ℃, the molecular weight of product reach the maximum; when the total amount of monomers reached 18 g and surfactant is 1.5g, the polymerization is best. To get the highest molecular weight of P(AM-DMC-BMA), the condition must be got : initiator 0.6mL, BMA 3%, initiation temperature 45℃, all monomer 20%, surfactant 3g.IR spectrum analysis indicates that the polymer P(AM-DMC-BMA) monomer contains three particular functional group and it’s formed by the polymerization of the three monomers.P(AM-DMC-BMA) is better than PAM on the capability of flocculating performance. The folcculate capability of P(AM-DMC-BMA) based on the factors, when the pH was 7, the amount of the cation on polymer reached 1.0mmol/g and the polymer’s molecular weight was 2.4×106,the dosage of polymer reached 1.2mL and stirring time reached 25 min the polymer’s capability of flocculating performance was best. When used the P(AM-DMC-BMA) to treated three different waste water, the result showed that when uses this polymer to treat waste water of kaolin, the flocculating performance was the best,then was waste water of PVSK, this polymer’s flocculating performance on colloid was the worst.
