Preparation of graft polymer by atom transfer radical polymerization(ATRP) asliving/controlled technology had successfully applied to polymer synthesis. In this paper, anew method was provided for graft-modified PP which was modified with ATRP method bygraft polymerization.PP could be chlorinated by radical graft reaction, using of PP as raw material,AIBN/BPO as the initiator and chlorobenzene as solvent. It could be derived the values ofchloride by the titration. Investigating on the reaction conditions such as time, temperature,initiator concentration and obtaining the optimal chloride process.chlorinatedpolypropylene(CPP) was characterized by FTIR. Experimental results showed thatthe chloride of CPP reached for52%when AIBN as the initiator at120℃for5hours.With CPP as macroiniator, monomer MMA and St were got graft polymerization, usingthe CuCl/PMDETA and CuCl/BPY as catalytic system respectively. Both of monomerachieved atom transfer radical graft polymerization in four types of reaction syetem. Themolecular weights and molecular weight distributions of products were determined by GPC.The results showed that monomer conversion rate of the four systems and number-averagemolecular weight of graft polymer had showed linear increasing trend, the molecular weightdistributions of products in the system of CuCl/PMAETA were narrower, Mw/MnofPP-g-MMA were at1.39-1.46, Mw/Mnof PP-g-St were at1.24-1.35. In contrast, themolecular weight distributions of products in the system of CuCl/BPY were wider, Mw/MnofPP-g-MMA were at1.55-1.65, Mw/Mnof PP-g-St were at1.31-1.43. However, all of themwere less than the molecular weight distribution of the ordinary radicalpolymerization(Mw/Mn>2). Besides, it was also investigated that the influence of initiatorconcentration, monomer concentration and catalytic system concentration on ATRP andidentified the optimal ratio of amount of substance. The monomer: macroiniator: catalyst:coordination agent was equal to100:1:1:2. The concentration of MMA was1.62mol/L and Stwas1.45mol/L.
