Wood Plastic Composites (WPC) are considered as a sort of environment-friend material that meets the criteria of sustainable development. Research and exploration on WPC bring good social beneficial results and economic efficiency. However, the massive hydroxyl present in wood flour make it be chemical polar. The poor compatibility of wood flour and nonpolar polyolefin affect the mechanical properties and water absorption. So research on the preparation of interfacial compatibilizer which could improve properties of WPC is of great value and importance.Maleated1,2-polybutadiene (MAPB) was grafted onto polypropylene (PP) in the presence of dicumyl peroxide (DCP). The appearance of characteristic absorption peaks assigned to MAPB by Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy demonstrated that MAPB could be grafted onto PP. Result by thermogravimetry (TG) indicated that peak temperature Tp(PP)<Tp(MAPB-g-PP). The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) was used to test the grafted production, and the results showed crystallization nucleation of PP was induced by the grafting of MAPB, with the crystallization rate being increased. The investigation on affecting factors of MAPB-g-PP grafting rate showed that the MAPB-g-PP which prepared at a speed of60rpm,180℃, with MAPB mass fraction of24wt%, DCP addition of0.4wt%and antioxidant addition of0.10wt%for7min had maximum grafting rate. MAPB-g-PP which prepared at a speed of60rpm,180℃, with MAPB mass fraction of26wt%, DCP addition of0.4wt%and antioxidant addition of0.12wt%for7min had the best interfacial compatibility effect. Then MAPB-g-PP was applied in WPC whose properties were tested. Results showed that WPC’s mechanical properties were increased, water absorption was decreased and the thermostability of WPC was increased. Result by CONE suggested that MAPB-g-PP played a role in promoting heat and CO/CO2to release. Result of DSC indicated that addition of MAPB-g-PP could lower the WPC’s crystallization temperature, and interfacial adhesion was improved. Result of SEM indicated that MAPB-g-PP could enhance the interfacial combination between wood flour and PP.
