Cotton fabric is widely used around the various industries in the world. However, the biggest disadvantage is the flammability of cotton fabric. Every year, a lot of fires are caused by fabric buring, damage to the human life. Currently, most of commonly used durable flame retardant are based on halogen, nitrogen and organic-phosphorus compounds.e.g. Proban and Pyrovatex CP. However, they involves use of formaldehyde during manufacture or application, and the used of halogen flame retardants has many issues including dioxins formation when burnt. So its application and development are restricted. Based phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardants, is a halogen-free, formaldehyde-free and environment-friendly flame retardants, expansion when heated and on the surface of flaretardant material formed a layerof dense char to protection base material to achieve the effect of flame retardant. In this paper, using pentaerythritol and phosphorus oxychloride as the raw material to be generated against Spiro dichloride. Then Spiro dichloride and tetrahydropyrrole as intermediates at a ratio of about1:4are added onto a certain amount acetone and refluxing5-6h, a kind of white power is obtained. The analysis of FTIR,1HNMR,31PNMR, elements were done.Tetrahydropyrrole Spirocyclic Phosphoramidate, a kind of flame retardant synthesized by ourselves, was used in cotton fabrics flame retardant finishing combined with polyacrylate resin adhesive. The flame retardant finishing conditions were optimized by orthogonal design method. It was found that the better finishing conditions are:the ratio of flame retardant and adhesive is1.5:1(w:w), the ratio of cotton fabric and flame retardant adhesive is60:40, the cure temperature is140℃and the cure time is1.5min. Under the better condition, the LOI of the cotton raises from18.2%to28.9%, the flame retardant level reaches B1level, and the breaking force increases from364N(warp-wise)and320N(across warp)to917N(warp-wise)and472N(across warp), which indicates that TPSP improves not only cotton’s flame retardancy but also the strength. Thermogravimetric Analysis results show that TPSP improves effectively cotton charred form performance. Generated gas through thermal decomposition were analysis by FTIR, results show that finished cotton always have volatiles, The amount of CO2produced by both the rise of temperature increase. Cone calorimetry test results show that the finished cotton has lower heat release rate(HRR) than that of untreated cotton. Improving the flame retardancy of the cotton fabric was proved. To further enhance the anti-flammable ability of TPSP and reduce HRR, SPR and cost of the flame retardant, at the better finishing conditions the APP was added to the TPSP in different proportions, then finished cotton. LOI, UL-94and mechanical testing were studied. These experimental results show that no matter which formulation of the TPSP and APP, the effect of flame retardant are better than pure TPSP. Comprehensive test results, the optimum flame retardant formulation is TPSP:APP=1:2. Thermogravimetric Analysis results show that the finished cotton’s initial decomposition temperature reduced and the residue at600℃increases from38.9%to42.6%that means APP promotes TPSP decomposition and increase the amount of char. Generated gas through thermal decomposition were analysis by FTIR, results show that after added APP the volatiles produced at lower temperatures and CO2increases faster. Cone calorimeter tests found that after joining APP, the heat release rate and COP were reduced proved improving the flame retardancy of the cotton fabric. To suppress the smoke release. The metal oxide was added to the flame retardant coating adhesive in different proportions, then finished the cotton fabric for its flame research. LOI, UL-94, TGA have been studied. Cone calorimeter tests found that after adding the metal oxide, the total amount of smoke also reduces, than TPSP/APP finished cotton decreased30.96%. The results show that the metal oxide can suppress the smoke release.
