At present, with the production of crude oil with a high acid value increasing steadily, itcaused great corrosion to pipeline and refining equipment for the existence of thenaphthenic acid. It is obvious that the effective solution of high acid-value crude oil becomemore important and the application prospect of the naphthenic acid displays more attractive. In this paper, a new kind of petroleum sulfonate was synthesized with bi-functional groupsof–COONa and–SO3Na on the same molecule. The naphthenic acids from Kalamay VGOwere sulfonated with SO3or sulfuric acid as sulfonation agent.Firstly, the basic properties of the material suah as acid value, relative molecular weightand so on were studied. Via screening of the single factor, the effect of all reactionconditions on product yields and acid sludge yield were studied at different solvent andsulfonated medium, such as reaction temperature, the ratio of solvent and the raw materialoil and the ratio of SO3and the naphthenic acid. Finally, the synthesis conditions wereoptimized and reaction parameters were determined. Meanwhile, the Interfacial tension ofthe products was studied. The molecular structures of sulfonation product and the raw oilwere characterized via FT-IR spectrometry and High resolution LC-MS method. It was found that the molecular structure of the naphthenic acid do not have aromatic ringbut have a special structure of carbonyl and saturated ring. And it has both appropriatemolecular weights and a sulfonic acid group by the sulfoned process, which means it quitesuits for the synthesis of petroleum sulfonate as material. With the conditions of sulfur trioxide as the sulfonating agent and ethylene dichloride as sulfonated medium, when theoil/raw material is more than3, sulfonation time is1hour, naphthenic acid could besulfonated with the acid residue rate of only1.30%. With the new solvent named A assulfonated medium, naphthenic acid could be sulfonated with no acid sludge, and the yieldof sulfonation production could reach68.55%. The bi-functional surfactant could lower theinterfacial tention between oil and water to10-2mN/m at the condition of optimization.
