The plastic products are widely used in our daily life, which puts forwardhigher standard on the design of injection mould. Currently, CAD technologyhas been applied to the design and production of injection mould. However, theautomation of design is still low. Some part of design depends too much onexperience, some requires highly qualified designers, and some need a lot ofrepetitively interactive work with computer. These problems seriously affect theproductivity of injection mould, which restricts the rapid development of mouldindustry. Therefore it is very necessary to study the new intelligent CADtechnology to improve the quality of mould, shorten the time of productdevelopment and reduce the cost of production.This paper focuses on the automation and intelligence of injection moulddesign. Combined with the mould developing process of structure designing,analyzing, and generating engineering documents, this paper designs the entireframework of intelligent mould design system and the following three partswhich affect the efficiency of mould design are studied:(1) The design of slide and lifter. The structural design of slide and lifter is difficult because they involve themovement of multiple directions and are easy to interfere with each other whenmoving. In this paper, the library of slide and lifter is established. Usingparametric technology and database, the function of importing, editing3Dmodel and extending the knowledge library are incorporated in this system.(2) The automotive motion simulation and interference checking.Injection mould contains numerous individual parts and it is difficult andtime-consuming to set motion simulation for common users. Besides theinterference checking of the original system is much slow. To solve theseproblems, this paper realizes the automatic motion simulation and proposes thedynamic interference detection algorithm based on bounding box, whichsignificantly improves the efficiency of motion simulation and interference.(3) The auto-generating engineering drawing.The engineering drawing connects design and production, but the drawingwork especially the dimensioning, is tedious and labor-intensive. To overcomethese problems, this paper proposes an automatic dimensioning algorithm andmesh-based dimensioning automatic layout algorithm to achieve a fullyautomatic drawing generation. The drawing generated by this way can beaccomplished in a very short time and the layout of drawing is clear andbeautiful.This paper develops the three modules and integrates them on the injectionmould intelligent system with the VS2008development platform and NX second development technology. Now this intelligent system has beensuccessfully applied to the mould company and it achieved good practicalresults.
