Simulation of fabric appearance is one of the key technologies of digital textile, which ishighly valuable and applicable in textile industry. through the virtual weaving machine, it can beeasily achieved virtual weaving by a simulated weaving of yarns and specified weave patterns sothat obtain its performance effect rapidly. This technology has important practical significance fortextile industry, such as improve the design efficiency of designers, simplify the design process oftraditional textiles, shorten the cycle of pushing new products to market, enhance thecompetitiveness of the enterprise, and meet the increasing demand of design industry. The article introduces some typical models of weaving simulation existing in the world andalso provides a new approach to virtual weaving machine based on the image of real yarn surfaces.First, a device is designed to obtain the characteristics of yarns appearance information, which willbe listed in an index table including geometric features and colors. Second, to realize thedigitization of weave structure, some basic matrixes are applied to represent various weavingstructures when building the fabric structure database in the computer. These basic matrixesselected from the database can be expended in rows and columns to match the requirement ofspecific structures in weaving simulation. To accomplish this approach, the first step is to set up aweaving net based on the geometric sizes, number of warps and wefts, and sequences. Then, thenext step is to match the expended matrixes to the weaving nets through a “mapping mode” inorder to get properties of all the nodes on the net. Later on, a connection matrix and a stress matrix, which stem from the weaving matrix, are used to regulate the nodes, generating a VisualProcessing Units (VPU). Also, in this process, the distribution of node properties and the visualfeature of yarns stress can be displayed in the images of fabric appearance. Finally, the simulationof a specified fabric structure can be realized through drawing VPUs on the weaving net, based onthe node shapes, illumination models and colors of selected yarns. In this article, the new approachhas been simulated and demonstrated to be successful in reconstructing specific weaving patternswith sample of yarns. The approach mentioned above can accurately present the visual effect of yarns on fabricstructures and also supports scientific basis for evaluating the function and application of yarns.
