Cermet is a composite material, which composes of a kind of metal or alloy andceramic. Metallic phase volume fraction is from15%to85%. Because the metal has goodthermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, the ceramics has high wear resistance, highhardness, chemical stability. As a result, with the properties of the ceramic and metal, cermet is a kind of important functional materials. The study on cermet becomes animportant research direction in the field of composite materials. At present, the cermet is based on non-ferrous metal matrix composites concentratingon the aluminum, magnesium. However, the price of cermet which is based on aluminumandmagnesium is high, so the scope of application is limited. Meanwhile, steel productioncapacity is excess in China, and the price of steel is low, iron based cermet materials researches are rare. With the development of modern industry, single material is difficult to meetthe demand for high performance materials. Developing a metal iron as matrix ceramicmaterial needs to adapt to the development of industry, and opens up new avenues for ironand steel industry. The reduced iron powder is used as the metallic phase in this paper. The ceramicphase is hercynite, and the composition of volume ratio is1:1,finally,by hot-pressingsintering the Fe/FeAl2O4cermet prepared. First of all, Fe and FeAl2O4are raw materials, and by planetary ball mill for grinding and mixing, then the hydraulic pressure tablet pressis used to carry out the prepress molding, Fe/FeAl2O4cermet is prepared by hot pressingsintering at last. By using scanning electron microscopy to analysis on plane and fracturemorphology of the sample, the compact, thermal conductivity, hardness, bending strengthand so on are tested, the powder mixing and sintering, pressing and sintering processparameters (sintering temperature, holding time and sintering pressure) are studied, theyinfluence the microstructure, the sintering performance, the thermal conductivity and themechanical properties of the Fe/FeAl2O4cermet. The Fe/FeAl2O4cermet performance trends along with the change of sintering parameters, the parameters of the ideal hotpressing sintering process for preparing Fe/FeAl2O4cermet are: the best holding time isabout7.5min, the best sintering temperature is about1450℃and the best sinteringpressure is about21.16MPa.
