The dual gradient drilling technology could solve the problems associated withformation pressure in deepwater drilling operation in theory, and significant environmentaland economic benefits could be obtained. With the expansion of ocean exploratory drillingand increase of drilling depth, currently a significant industry focus is on dual gradientdrilling technology. Subsea mudlift drilling technology, as one kind of dual gradient drillingtechnology, has been developed a variety of drilling systems. In order to promote subseamudlift drilling technology for our services, the study on the subsea mud suction module ispresented in this paper, which is one key parts of subsea mudlift drilling system. The paper issponsored by National Science and Technology Major Special Project(2008ZX0526-001-12),and the research on subsea mudlift drilling technology and durability of subsea mud suctionmodule is conducted. The main research achievements are as follows:1Research on new type of dual gradient drilling technologyThe basic principle of dual gradient drilling technology is analyzed. Based on the trackand study of latest progress of dual gradient drilling systems abroad, the composition andcharacteristics of various dual gradient drilling systems are studied. The challenges faced bydual gradient drilling technology are researched. The research could provide support for thedevelopment of new dual gradient drilling system in China.2Analysis on durability of the key component of subsea mud suction moduleAccording to drilling operation requirements of subsea mudlift drilling technology andsubsea service environment, environment and operation suitability of subsea mud suctionmodule is studied, and the performance of key components including module outer shell andinternal cylinder of rotating assembly and seal system, is analyzed under different waterpressure and drilling fluid pressure, and the performance of subsea mud suction module couldbe improved.3Study on performance analysis of seal rubber for subsea mud suction moduleSeal rubber is the vulnerable part of subsea mud suction module, and finite elementresearch is conducted by use of ABAQUS software. The research involves structural formselection, environmental impact, shape optimization, and arrangement scheme, and it couldenhance the operation life of seal rubber.4Durability design of subsea mud suction module on structural detailsBased on the subsea environment and the requirements of subsea mud suction modulefor installation, operation and maintenance, key measures are taken, which including structure design for discharge device and pressure balancing device, scheme design for lubricating andcooling system, treatment technology for seal rubber and coupling seal surface and design ofbearing arrangements. It could enhance the suitability of subsea mud suction module fordrilling operation.
