Modular design technology occupies a very important position in both advanced production and modern manufacturing, and it is one of the key technologies to ensure obtaining success in international competition. On the other hand, because of the development of new technology and the change of the market at home and abroad, the update speed of new products becomes faster and the period of the market becomes shorter. So we must enforce innovation capability, shorten design cycle and increase degree of customization, at the same time we have to reduce cost, maintain quality of product and good after-service. Traditional method of designing cannot have met above-mentioned needs. Modular design turns mass production of customized products and individualization of it into realization by module programming and combination, and it can fit the demand of fierce competition of market. The high-speed turning center is one of the most widely used in metal cutting. It has important theoretical and practical significance that using modular design method in the design and production of the high-speed turning center. The main contents of this paper are outlined as followed:(1) Based on the analysis of customer requirement, the main parameters and chief function of the machine tool are determined. This paper researches the function decompose method, proposes the method to express the function decompose result using function principle structure tree, and thus constructs the function structure model.(2) Proposes the principle and process model of machine tool module partition. Based on the function analysis, this paper synthetically takes into account all sorts of relevant standards, and divides the machine tool by computing the correlative degree of the sub-function, researches the evaluation method of machine tool module partition in detail and makes a reasonable assessment and decision-making to the partition program by the method of analytic hierarchy process.(3) Proposes the idea of module series design, studies the series design of parts with the design table of the SolidWorks and the re-development of the SolidWorks, and at last studies the application of case, which provides the basis for modular design to high-speed turning center.(4) Based on the theory of function analysis, module partition and evaluation, series design, this paper develops the modular design system of the high-speed turning center by using VB, which has important significance for the product to carry through modular design and the enterprise to implement the strategy of modularization.(5) Discussing the ways and means to implement the structure and configuration management of high-speed turning center modules based on TCEng product lifecycle management platform, together with some application examples.
