With the development of economic, the competition among the enterprises of machinery industry is more and more intense. So enterprises must enhance the innovation ability, shorten the period of design, reduce the production costs, guaranteed quality and good after-sales service to customers. Under the new market situation of product individuation and mass customization, the traditional means can’t perform the work of design, modular design has attracted more attention.In this paper, the basic knowledge and principle of modular design and on the design flow and design procedures of modular design are described. On these bases, fuzzy clustering method, AHP and QFD are integrated. The application of the method in Modular design is introduced with an example of machine tool spindle system.The critical step of modular design is module division. In this paper, we separate modules by the method. At first,we analysis and understand the demands from customers,then determine the function needs of users. After that we separate the total function of a production by function decomposition,and then we can know about the relationship among components and parts. Based on demand analysis and functional analysis and so on, we can get a series of modular partition schemes by fuzzy clustering method. Then,using entropy, a best programming plan can be selected by the evaluation of design, manufacture, assemble and maintain and so on. As an application example, a machine tool spindle system using this method and we get a division scheme.After separating modules, the modules need to be managed. We need group the modules together reasonable to meet the needs of the client. If the modules can’t meet customer needs, contact with interdepartmental support function to coordinate modules changes, new additions to ensure timeliness and accuracy focus on satisfying customer needs. The paper manage modules though coding method,introduce the coding structure and principles of a coding method for machine tool spindle system. The different products of different customers have different needs to modules. So we need module configuration. Configure the suitable modules tor the product to meet design requirements. The article proposes a fast efficient method of module configuration based on AHP and QFD. As an application example, the Bearing module of a machine tool spindle system using this method.The research makes improvement and supplement to the existing method of modular design, provides a method for the design of the machine tool spindle system. It has real meaning to accelerate module design to be used in the design of machine tool.
