Study On Synthesis And Property Of Octadecyl P-xylene Sodium Sulfonates

Alkylbenzene sulfonate is one kind of widely used surface activeagents in industrial applications. It plays a very important role duringEOR surfactant flooding for enhanced oil recovery. In this study, Iexplored and described the synthesis of octadecyl p-xylene sodiumsulfonates. Fatty acid, alkyl bromide and p-xylene are reactants. AfterFriedel-Crafts reaction, Grignard reagent reaction, high-pressurehydrogenation catalytic reduction, and sulfonate reactionand purification,etc. Ultimately, I succeed to synthesize a series of Octadecyl p-xylenesodium sulfonate isomers. With using nuclear magnetic resonancespectroscopy(NMR) and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry(LC-MS), the products are characterized. The structure is right. The product isthe target product. The product purity is proven by two-phase titration,the analysis showed a purity higher than95%. Platinum Circle method isused to investigate the surface tension of a series of the test sample,measuring the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and critical surfacetension (γcmc).
