Cutting header is the core component of roadheader, whose performances directly influence the working performance of the roadheader. Therefore, it’s important to research all the parameters of cutting header. On the base of the discrete element method (DEM), the working process of cutting coal for picks was analyzed by DEM.The two-dimensional simplified models of cutting header were added movement properties and material properties through the Object ARX secondary development technologies. Two-dimensional DEM simulation program of cutting header was created by using VC++software development platform. According to the basic structure characteristics of coal particles, the simulation models of coal were adopted to establish by DEM. By adopting parallel connection model between coal particles and coal particles, linear viscoelastic model between coal particles and picks, the two-dimensional DEM system of cutting header was established. By utilizing the two-dimensional DEM system, the reasonable cutting speed was determined by different cutting speed simulation of cutting coal.Using the three-dimensional model of a single pick as the research object, the working process of Cutting header was simulated by EDEM. The simulation calculation of cutting angle of45°was analyzed about the velocity field and the contact force curve. By analyzing the working process of different cutting angles, the cutting angle of45°was determined as the reasonable cutting angle.Research results preliminarily proved the feasibility of using DEM to analyze the working procedure of the cutting header and provided a new research method for its optimization design.
