In recent years, with the modernization drive in our country, the process of urbanization is increasing day by day. However, the continuing growth of urban population makes life garbage increase dramatically. Establishing a waste transfer station is the main way of processing and transport of municipal waste at home and abroad. The garbage compaction is the most important structure of the station. On-site steel structure, garbage compactor and rubbish box are the main parts of the garbage compaction device, which are critical to the garbage compaction degree and stability of the whole process.This paper is mainly derived from the to the science and technology projects of Dalian(project number:2010E14SF148) and economic and information projects of Dalian(project number:2009-3-215-jw-cxyhz). According to the data and structure of the vertical compaction devices in many places, the simulation model of them are designed and the structure are optimized. The compression efficiency is improved and the cost is reduced eventually. The specific procedures are as follows:(1) Shape optimization of the vertical garbage compactor head.This paper simulates four different shapes of compactor such as round, square, push spade and wedge for the vertical garbage compactor, then the compaction finite element models corresponding to the different compactors are built. According to the result of the analysis, the optimization target for the shape of compactor head which reflecting the garbage compaction rate and the comprehensive evaluation scheme are clarified. Finally the most appropriate circular flat head is got by the scheme. This result is consistent with the existing compactor shape of the vertical garbage station, and it also provides a basis for the compactor structure optimization.(2) Topology optimization for the vertical type trash compactor internal structure.According to the result of compactor shape optimization, the finite element model of cylindrical compactor is set up. Using the principle of variable density method to topology optimization on it, and according to the cloud of material distribution, a new compactor structure is designed. Comparing with the existing structure and the new structure by finite element analysis, the maximum stress and strain of the new compactor are reduced, the quality is also relatively decreased by23.5%(1643.08kg).(3)The optimization design for steel structure framework.For the two kinds of working conditions:the compactor on the steel structure when it is stationary on the compression station and when the maximum compressive strength appears during garbage compaction. The finite element of the steel structure framework in the waste station is set up. Then import the result into the FE-Safe software for the steel structure fatigue analysis. According to the results, making the steel structure improved. Then the maximum weight of the optimization structure compared with the former one is decreased by213.23kg (1.6%) and the life from4.97years improve to11.71years. In the meantime, the lifetime of the structure is expanded when the security strength is guaranteed.
