Water is the source of life! Nowadays, people pursuit the material life increasingly, while ignoring the problems of environmental pollution. Of all the environmental problems, water pollution is the most important aspect. Water pollution will have a great impact on the human life. In order to obtain the information of water pollution timely, early to determine whether the water is contaminated, we should develop a pollution monitoring system that can access the data of water efficiently. Currently, the collection of data in water contaminants still based on manual collection. It’s difficult to collect the data of some remote rivers. Therefore, it is urgent to develop an effective monitoring system.With the development of science and technology, wireless sensor networks come into people’s view gradually. There are more and more researches and applications based on wireless sensor networks, whose coverage are very extensive. From the initial military systems to human life, such as environmental monitoring and health management are all the reflection of WSN applications. Based on the background of wireless sensor networks, we design and develop a set of water pollution monitoring system. This system is suitable for long distance communication environment, as well as short-distance transmission environment.First, this paper describes the background and significance of the selected topic, introduces the research progress of wireless sensor networks and application status in monitoring water quality. It also describes the basic theoretical knowledge and key technologies of wireless sensor networks in details. Then, this paper divides into two chapters, describes the design of water monitoring system based on the wireless sensor network in details. It introduces the hardware and software of the system, from the angle of long-distance and short-distance communications. In both designs, we use the chips named CC1110and CC2430. The CC1110chip is used as the MCU (micro unit) in long-distance communication system, while the CC2430is used as the MUC in a short-range communication. The former system uses the protocol that is based on SimpliciTI, and the latter one uses the ZigBee protocol. In the end, we tested, analyzed the systems and compared the results with the professional equipments on the market, and got some conclusions.Finally, we conduct a comprehensive summary summarizes about the research topic. And illustrate and analyze the disadvantage of the whole work, then put forward some suggestions for the further study.
