With the economic development of society, huge quantities of municipal wastewater were produced by human activities. Water pollution and shortage became a stubborn and crucial global problem. The annual 1/3 of industrial wastewater and 90% of municipal wastewater were discharged into water system without any treatment in China.Traditional wastewater treatment techniques achieve a well effect in dealing with wastewater, but still some defects, such as:(1) Complex operation and management(2) High capital investment and operation costs(3) Surplus sludge(4) Low efficiency in N/P removal.Traditional Soil infiltration system was becoming a mature wastewater treatment technique after a long-term development, but also some defects. Based on this situation, Soil infiltration system was modified by combined stuffing to be directed against the weakness of this system and set for multilevel developed Vertical Multilevel Soil Infiltration system (VMSI). In this study, soil was packed in reactor and performed to remove the pollutant in municipal wastewater to find out the pollutant removal capacity of soil, the optimal soil/quartz ratio was found to avoid blocking; several stuffing was selected to enhance the pollutant removal capacity, and proportion of abiological process and effect of long-term performance were performed to evaluate the pollution removal capacity of VMSI, the system showed excellent pollutant removal capacity on many contaminations, especially on organics, NH4+-N and TP removal, the quality of effluent of VMSI achieved National wastewater discharge standard (GB18918-2002) IA.In this study, Vertical Multilevel Soil Infiltration system was performed to evaluate the pollutant removal capacity on municipal wastewater, provide the basic data and technical support for the VMSI application.
