Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, women's competitive sports of our country have made remarkable achievements. Meanwhile, the sportswear for competitive sports, as special costume, not only is the sports equipment of athletes, but also reflects the developmental level of competitive sports and comprehensive national power of the country. However, little research has been done in the area of Chinese women's sportswear and there is no monograph. Studying on the development and change of women's sportswear for competitive sports and then carefully sorting, analyzing and summarizing them have important significance in prompting faster and more healthy development of women's sportswear for competitive sports in our country and bridging the gap between our country and the world's developed countries in sport.Chinese women's competitive sportswear does been researched through the methods of documentary, image observation, logical analysis, comparison and so on. Gymnastics, athletics and badminton are firstly selected as representative sports, then the development of sportswear of the competitive sports are divided into two stages (one ranges from 1949 to 1977 and the other ranges from 1978 to 2008, taking the Reform and Opening as dividing line) according to the characteristics and regularity of change of the costume and finally the evolvement and development process of the costume of the three competitive sports are explored respectively from four aspects of style, colour, pattern and material during the 60 years.The result from this thesis indicates that the changes of costume of Chinese women's gymnastics from separation to integration, from fitting style to tight fitting one, from sleeveless costume to the costume with long sleeves and from simpleness to fashion. It concludes that Chinese women's sportswear for athletics has undergone the change from the style of men's underwear to unisex clothing and then to the style highlighting femaleness, from the style of vest to short-sleeved shirt and then to half vest, from loose to fitting and then to tight fitting and from singleness to variety; the costume for women's badminton changes from white to colorized, from shorts to miniskirt, from the characteristic of keeping tradition to the one of showing sex appeal and fashion and the material has been changed from cotton to jute poplin and polycotton, nylon and Lycra and ten to each kind of new hi-tech fabrics, which transforms from natural fibre to synthetic fibre. Finally, the thesis analyzes the factors which affects and promotes the development of women's sportswear from the aspects of politics, economy, culture and science and technology. Moreover, it summarizes the development tendency of commercialization, fashion and harmonization of Chinese women's competitive sportswear.In short, the thesis makes the conclusion that Chinese women's competitive sportswear will develop towards the aim of reflecting the harmonious beauty among costume, sport and human. Besides, the author hopes that the thesis will provide some valuable reference for research on sportswear in the future.
