Food safety relates to the people's health and life safety, the economic development and social stability,the relationship between the governmental and national image. Food safety depends on the effort of the government, enterprises and society. How to increase the level of citizens'knowledge on food safety, improve the ability to protect themselves and enhance their awareness of food safety is currently an important part of food safety.ObjectiveTo understand Shanghai citizens' attitudes to the status of food safety, their cognition of knowledge on food safety and their views to the publicity activities on food safety which was organized by the government. Then to find out the best and popular methods and patterns of publicizing food safety and offer decision-making basis for effectively carrying out promotional activities on food safety.MethodA questionaire survey was conducted among 1300 citizens who were randomly chosen from 4 downtowns in shanghai at random(325 citizens every downtown).The survey included food safety recognition,attitude towards food safety issues, purchasing behaviors, habits of diets and meal preparation and so on. Analyze citizens'cognition of knowledge on food safety and its influence factors in order to provide some related suggestions.Result1.Shanghai citizens'awareness of food safety was high because 83.4% of residents surveyed said they would care food safety issues in their daily life. However, only 54.0% of the residents felt the food safe in the city.2. Poultry meat, milk and seafood were the top three kinds of food which citizens were not assured. And residues of pesticides, antibiotics, and heavy metals, abuse of food additives and food quality deterioration were most worried about by residents.3. The citizens with highly educated and high income were more concerned about food safety issues. Meanwhile,for the attitude towards food safety, citizens who were highly educated or in the service industry were more assured of food security than others.4.82.9% of residents would accept the promotional materials of food safety, but only 41.8% would participated in food safety campaigns organized by government. The results also showed that television, newspapers and computer network were the three most important sources of information related to food safety in Shanghai, and most residents also hoped the government could carry out more lectures and on-site consultation to help them access more information.5.80% of the residents indicated that they would see the labels on food packaging, concerned about the production date, shelf life, manufacturer and the brand. But more than 30% of the residents could understand only a little of the label contents.6. The diet habits of residents in Shanghai were reasonable, with the appropriate proportion of fruits and vegetables, meat and sweets, but a few residents still need to improve their eating habits.7. only 67.5% of Shanghai citizens knew the new " Food Safety Law of the People's Republic of China " had been promulgated and implemented, and 33.7% didn't knew that they could require manufacturers or salers to pay ten times value besides compensation.Suggestion1. Establishing and improving food quality control system to effectively prevent substandard products from entering the market and make sure the residents enjoy safe food.2. Making full use of the favorable conditions that the residents generally concerned about food safety to carry out food safety drumbeating.3.Adjusting promotion investment and publicizing strategies by the media, network and expert lectures, on-site consultation campaign.4. Guiding residents to understand the legal knowledge of food safety, improving the recognition of food safety law and gradually cultivating rights awareness of food safty.
