In the wake of the global marketing waves of agricultural production, more and more attentions are being targeted on improving agricultural industry chain (AIC). As part of this trend, studies on AIC has been an internationally focused priority home and abroad, although the progresses in this field achieved in China still far lag behind what the counterparts abroad have done like in USA and the Netherlands. In particular, there is an urgent problem need to be determined in this broad scope, i.e., whether the AIC in a municipality area like Lanzhou, which is usually fast going on the track of non-agro sectors expansion based on the more and more transfer of factors from agriculture, could survive from the open marketing competition. In view of the importance to study AIC in a municipality area, adding the significance of concerns on the security of agro-produce, the Bureau of Science and Technology of Lanzhou (BSTL) announced a research project Studies on the technological innovation of extending the agricultural industry chain and strengthening the agro-produce competitiveness in Lanzhou, which has been the source of research problems studied in this dissertation. The study applied the methodology of exploring the key issue in a hierarchical context in terms of AIC in a municipality area, and conducted a series of field investigation of it. Using the technical innovation to lengthen the agriculture industry chain in Lanzhou, increasing the attachment value and enhancing the competitive ability of the agro-product are a master line of this study. This study involves in three aspects: the agro-produce competitiveness (APC) status quo of the agro-produce in Lanzhou; the AIC status quo in Lanzhou--take the vegetables as example; the formation of the technological innovation system to lengthen AIC and enhance APC in Lanzhou. The main results and conclusions of the study as follows: (1) APC is an integrated system and the factors influencing it can be divided into two classes: direct and indirect factors. According to analysis of the typical agro-produce in Lanzhou (lily, vegetables, fruits and melons, and grain, etc.) respectively, APC in Lanzhou showed in a wide spectrum from very high level (lily, melon, etc.) to a little bit low (grain). The agricultural natural resources, the agricultural modernization, the support of the agricultural technology, the agricultural workforce competence and the agricultural industrialization level are in the lower level in Lanzhou and the government support to agriculture is not enough, that all influences the improvement of APC in Lanzhou. (2) From the point of view in terms of the stages of the vegetables industry chain (production, the storage and transport, the processing, selling), we know the AIC (vegetables) is relatively short and narrow in Lanzhou. Most agro-produce are sold in the primary forms, both the added value and the economic benefit are low. Meanwhile, through the computation...
