In the past few years, with the intensification of globalization and galloping growth of China's economy, more and more German companies are entering China to explore business opportunities in this huge and promising market. However, due to the cultural difference, there exist frequent conflicts in different time perspectives between Chinese and German employees, which cause many misunderstandings, even failures in their communications. This thesis is to conduct an in-depth research and analysis in respect to difference in time perspectives, and provide some reference for managers as to achieve a better result in time management. This thesis attempts to examine the differences in time perspective between the Chinese and German employees. After reviewing some major theoretical and applied studies in this field, the author will analyze several cultural modes to conduct her study, such as monochronic vs. polychronic, past, present, future-orientation, and then puts forward six hypotheses. The study employs a quantitative methodology and uses two groups of subjects (employees working in Germany's and China's local companies respectively). With data collected and analyzed, the author identifies the hypotheses with respect to the following sections: monochronic vs. polychronic, past vs. future orientation, punctuality, pace, work-life balance, long- and short-term orientation, etc. Finally, the thesis points out the limitations of the study and proposes some recommendations for Chinese and German companies for the achievement of effective communication and efficient time management.
