With the accelerated tendency of the global economic integration and the rapid development of science and technology throughout the world, the great changes are taking place in the scientific and technological innovation in the international auto industry. Technological innovation has become a powerful motivation of the continuously developing auto industry. During the course of China being new-type industrialized, the auto industry is a pillar industry of the national economy which plays an important strategic role in the national economic development. However, compared with developed countries of auto industry in the world, Chinese auto industry lags much behind them. The worse, since most of the core technologies in the hands of a few multinational companies, a strong technical barrier, which has become a obstacle of our traditional auto industry in the field of technology innovation. Therefore, strengthening the self-innovation and promote the self-innovation abilities of Chinese auto industry is of great importance to the acceleration of Chinese national economic development. So, study the self-innovation of Chinese auto industry has greater usage value and realistic directive significance. This article questions the very beginning of the first chapter, after more than 50 years'development, Chinese auto industry has made remarkable progress, which has become an important production sector in the national economy. However, the technological innovation capability of Chinese automobile industry is still feeble, especially it lacks self-innovation capability, which directly resulted in a serious lack of core technologies independent intellectual property rights and independent brands. So it can't create its own competitive advantage. Weak capability of self-innovation of Chinese auto industry has become a "bottleneck."Chapter 2, the author study the theory of self-innovation and competitive advantage, and analyzes the content classification and characteristics of self-innovation in several levels. Give a general sense concept of self-innovation. Self-innovation is an activity that the principals of self-innovation rely on their own (or principally rely on their own) tangible and intangible resources to achieve technological breakthroughs, thereby lead the entire industry or support the development of the social economy. Then on this basis of the above the author analyzes the relationship between self-innovation and enterprise development. Then combining the theory of Competitive advantages the author studies the relationship between self-innovation and competitive advantage.Chapter 3, the author studies self-innovation theory deeply on the industrial level, and studies the concepts and features of the industrial self-innovation, define the industrial capability of self-innovation. Then the author analyzes the process of the industrial self-innovation and the factors affecting it in order to construct indicator system of industrial capability of self-innovation.Chapter 4, according to systematic, scientific, feasible principles the author construct indicator system of industrial capability of self-innovation on the basis of previous studies. Then divide industrial capability of self-innovation into 5 parts including resources for innovation, research and development, capacity of producing, outputs, innovative environment. First part includes research expenses, technology-introducing expenses, the number of people attending technology activities, digesting and absorbing expenses. Second part includes the number of patent applications, research institutions at all levels, the number of scientists and engineers .Third part includes the number of major equipments for producing, fixed assets value of producing, producing area. Fourth part includes new products value/ industrial output value, new products sales/total products sales, labor productivity for new products. Fifth part includes policy environment and financial environment, education environment considerations. Then, the author study three methods principal component analysis and cluster analysis to evaluate the industrial capacity of self-innovation of Chinese auto industry.Chapter 5, the author makes empirical analysis about the auto industry. First, analyze the structure of the world automobile industry, and undertake a review of the history of technological innovation in our auto industry. Second, look up the China Science and Technology Statistical Yearbook 2004, Chinese intellectual property rights Yearbook 2004, Chinese auto industry Statistical Yearbook 2004 and other relevant information. By consolidating calculating the author gets the original data Table of 13 enterprises whose auto industry are relative concentrated. Third, use statistical tool SPSS12.0 to perform comparative evaluation about capacity of putting resources into innovation, research and development capacity, capacity of producing, outputs by principal component analysis and cluster analysis. As follows: First, three principal components are extracted using the method of maximum variance from the rotation. The first principal component can be summarized as innovative resource inputs, the second principal component can be summarized as innovative production capacity. Then weights of the three principal components can be decided, and the weight of the first principal component is up to 0.5898. So we get the comprehensive evaluation of 13 enterprises about innovative resources putting into auto industry and the outputs. Then we get the capacity order of the 13 enterprises. Second, 13 enterprises is divided into two echelons through cluster analysis to the innovative resources input-output capacity, Shangqi, Yiqi, Dongfeng is the first echelon of the strong innovative resources input-output capability; Others are second echelon. The third step, perform cluster analysis about the innovation environment of the 13 enterprises, and they can be divided into four echelons. First echelon includes Jianghuai, Guangben, Qirui, Jili, with an ideal environment for innovation. The second echelon includes Changan, Yiqi. The third echelon includes Dongfeng, Beiqi and Shangqi. Fourth echelon includes Heilongjiang, Shandong, Jiangling, Jinbei, whose innovation environment are not good enough. Finally, according to the results above in the automotive industry ,the author uses the diamond theory to analyze the competitive advantage.and give some constructive suggestions.
