Along with the beginning of economic globalization, especially the speed of urbanization in northeast China has quickened since 1990s,the structure of urban system in northeast has changed a lot, the study on the regional spatial polarization has emerged silently. But in former research, it paid more attention to the economic increased spatial polarization which took GDP per person as representative, but not the spatial polarization of social index. From the theory and practice aspects, this thesis mainly analyzes the situation of urban spatial polarization based on the social index of 34 key cities in Northeast China. The four capitals ( Haerbin, Changchun, Shenyang and Dalian) have been more and more important in the dominant part of the city system. Besides, there are still other changes in recent years, for example, the central region aggrandizement, the city brinkation, the small town declination and the spatial division of the mixing degree of urban and rural. The social index has been changed with the economy polarization, putting up that polarization of social index has the similar changing trend with economic polarization, but not the same situation. This thesis consists of four parts:Firstly, it states the research scope, the data collection and the methodology.Secondly, it introduces the related theories and researches both in and abroad scholars with the comments.Thirdly, it analyzes the urban spatial polarization of key cities in Northeast China based on their development background after 1990s and the difference between them including mean GDP, income and population changes.Fourthly, it analyzes the social spatial polarization of the central cities, the four capitals and other typical cities, and then the specific polarization direction and its causing. Finally discusses the mechanism of polarization. The epilogue part gathers up main conclusion of the paper.
