With the rapid development of the tourism and intense competition of the city tourism, the city tourism image becomes one of the important contents of city planning construction. Brilliance and unique city tourism image is good for increasing the integrated competitiveness, and it has very important stimulative effect for the tourists to choose tour cities. Therefor, it is time to put the strategy of city tourism image into practice and studying on the orientation and designing of the city tourism image has practical meaning, it has become a hot problem in tourism industry.This paper takes the city tourism image as the goal, based on the study of pioneers and the theory of human geography, tourism,marketing, tourism psychology and theory of tourism planning etc, the author analyses general principles of the orientation and designing of the city tourism image. Finally, the author takes Urumqi for an example to design the city tourism image by applying the theory in practice. The primary contents are outlined as follows:Part one includes the backgrounds of this paper and makes a systematic exposition on the development of foreign and domestic study on city tourism image, expounds this paper′s significance, main methods and structure.Part two analyses general principles of the orientation and designing of the city tourism image, including the definition, form factors, and the hiberarchy of the city tourism image, expounds the academic contents of it.Part three analyses the backgrounds of the city tourism image orientation of Urumqi , based on the investigation about the tourists and citizens of Urumqi, combining competitive marketing analysis of the city tourism image, and finally advanced the orientation and slogan of Urumqi city.Part four based on the orientation of tour image, using the City Tourism Identy System (CTIS), designing the city tourism image of Urumqi from Mind Image (MI), Visual Image (VI), Behavior Image (BI) and other apperceive image, finally advances the taches while designing the city tourism image.Part five is the conclusion of this paper, summarizes the main contents of the whole paper, explains the new ideas in this thesis and then advances the prospect of this study.
