Most of the existing Production Planning Systems (PPS) of China, currently, are designed for special type of manufacturing firms. But when concerning the modes of production and styles of management, the different manufacturing firms have distinct features that differ amongst them. Hence, it should be appropriate to conclude that most traditional PPS lack variety and standard for plan-making and thus embody low-controllability of the system. In fact, the type diversity and changeability of the manufacturing firms require general PPS with flexible structure which can adapt to different types of manufacturing firms and facilitate fast reconfiguration while internal workflow and external environment may keep changing. So, it is of utmost significance from the viewpoint of both theory and practice to design and to develop a kind of multi-type oriented PPS in the general framework of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) which integrates advance technology of production planning management and information technology. This thesis attempts, first, at making an investigation of informationisation of the manufacturing industry and application of ERP system, and sums up by examining the problems of ERP that currently exists. Then it introduces production management theory and modern production management models. It introduces further the component technology and workflow management technology. Further it analyses the characteristics of production manner of different types and corresponding requirement of software structures and proposes the framework of the reconfigurable PPS. Further yet, a method for analysing the PPS flow according to workflow technology has been introduced and in this Petri net introduced whose aim is at modelling business processes for more flexible modification. Subsequently a design of the functions of PPS has been introduced as well as details of relative techniques. There are four main function modules in the PPS, namely basic data module, Master Production Schedule module (MPS), Material Requirements Planning module (MRP) and Capacity Requirements Planning module (CRP). In basic data module, a reconfigurable BOM has been designed. MPS has been designed to provide different method of planning. Targets of MRP have been designed to focus on problems about flexible leading time and batch production. Balance status between production capability and capability has been made to be concerns of CRP. Subsequently, it discusses in detail the design of the database of PPS and the method for implementing the reconfiguration of business process and function modules. Finally the thesis presents a case study of Haerbin Boiler Factory Ltd., and Haerbin Bearing Group Co., which demonstrate the availability of the reconfigurable characteristic of PPS and its universality for different types of manufacturing firms.
