Research On The Productivity Of Jiangsu's Industrial Enterprises

Economic growth is a main topic of the global concern. As a measurement of the economic operation in a certain industry or a certain area, productivity draws much attention as it is an integrative index that reflects the level of technical progress, technical efficiency and scale efficiency. Using productivity to analyze the source that drives the economic to grow can not only be of significantly instructive sense to the enterprise's development but provides a strong theoretic tool to the government to constitute the policy of macro economy. Productivity analysis is a main instrument for exploring the source of economic growth, and an important means to determine the growth quality as well. After the World War II, the focus of productivity research in the world changed from partial-factor productivity to total-factor productivity (TFP), and this symbolizes the beginning of modern productivity research.Since China's reform and opening up to the outside world, Jiangsu's economy keeps developing fast. As for Jiangsu province, if we want to keep Jiangsu's economy strengthening, an important thing should be understood is the role that scientific and technical progress plays in the economic development, the gap of the imbalance among the industrial enterprises in different areas in Jiangsu and how to promote the development of the regional industrial enterprises through raising the productivity. This thesis is to find out the source of Jiangsu's industrial enterprise's development through the analysis of productivity and the issues above, and thus propose some constructive recommendations to Jiangsu industry's sustainable development.On the basis of reviewing the national and international productivity research, the thesis firstly introduces the development of the productivity theory, including the development of the conception of productivity, the methods of measuring it (for example, C-D Produce Function and Solow Residual Value Method), and explains the relativity between TFP and the technological level. Following, we analyze the present situation of Jiangsu's industrial enterprises' development; make a comparison of the present industrial level and the scientific and technical progress among the 13 cities in Jiangsu. In the following positive study, the paper choose total value, capital, the number of the employment as indexes, data were all taken from the statistics of the industries in the 13 cities in Jiangsu from the statistic yearbook in Jiangsu ' (1997-2005). The paper use C-D Function of Production and the Eviews 5, the statistic software, to calculate the panel data. Capital efficiency, labor efficiency and TFP is calculated, the level that capital, labor and technology contributed to the economy growth is also measured, and as well make a comparison among the 13 cities in Jiangsu province. Through the research, we find that technical progress and capital investment play an important role in the development of Jiangsu's economy; the development of Jiangsu's industrial enterprises is technical progress and capital motivated, and it is the greatly different level of using capital, labor and technology among the northern, middle part and southern part of Jiangsu that cause the imbalance of the development of Jiangsu's industrial economy. Finally, we propose some suggestions to raise the productivity of Jiangsu's industry according to the factors influencing the productivity level such as capital investment, the degree of opening up to the outside world, the quality of human resource and scientific and technical progress.
