Economic And Trade Relations Between France And China In The Period Of The War Of Resistance Against Japan (1931—1940)

In 1931, Japan launched a war of aggression against China, but the Chinese government considered that the United States, Britain, France, and Soviet Russia , these four countries may show their sympathy and support in Chinese government's opinion , so the Chinese government paid even more attention on the relationship with the four countries in order to contain the Japanese aggression against China. In such a large international circumstances, the political, foreign policy and the economic situation at that time in China and France , gave the direct impact of the French investment in China and Sino-French economic and trade relations. At that time, the French did not have a stable government to implement effective economic policies, coupled with the impact of the economic crisis, which made France in the 1930s raise the economic recession, affected the Sino-French economic and trade development to a certain extent.In this paper, it is divided into 2 periods as the sector of " July 7th Incident" , which elaborates the investment of French in China, the Sino-French trade, Commodity Structure and its Changes , the borrows of France to China and its economic assistance, etc. in each period respectively, and did some analysis according to this to summed up the characteristics of Sino-French economic and trade relations in the Anti-Japanese War period and its impact to the War of Resistance Against Japan. Because of the political and historical factors, the Sino-French economic and trade ties was gradually fading trend. To June 1940, the ruling Vichy government adopted a series policies which is not good at the Anti-Japanese War, then the diplomatic relations in the government of Chongqing with the Vichy government was suspended, and the relationship between Sino-French trade was suspended some time . In general , this period of technological content contained of less investment in China, mostly on the main borrowers; the structure was rather simple in the field of bilateral trade commodity, mainly in raw silk and manufacturing; In 1937 the Sino-Japanese War broke out , the France exported the weapons to China substantial increasingly. Listed in text form on the surface, China's trade surplus had been in the favorable position of the two countries, however, it was not. Many datura showed the amount between China and France's trade only, which did not include the huge French Overseas Territories and the protection of State. In addition , France also made up some trade surplus to China from other sources , such as, the interest on loans to China, shipping income, concession economy and the local churches' investment, etc. So France is the beneficiary from the trade with China. But in the war of the resistance, it was provided by France for a certain number of Chinese weapons and munitions supplies, which improved the weapons and the situation of scarce resources, and strengthened the fighting capacity of the frontline battlefield for China .At the same time, France did a lot in Chinese cultural educational things , medical care, utilities and other aspects of investment, which provided assistances to the Chinese resistance, and it had a certain impact on the victory of China' s Anti-Japanese War.In this paper, the innovation lies in a comprehensive and systematic conformity to economic and trade relations of the 14 years of Sino-French War of Resistance Against Japan, and to analyze its characteristics, the causes produced its characteristics and the impact of the war . It made a comprehensive evaluation about the places of the Sino-French bilateral trade, the changes of commodity trade structure . What' s more , in this paper, the author makes the further research about the Japanese policy to Chinese enterprises, and the enterprises operation of the French enterprises in China in the falling regions , which to a certain extent.
