To all Chinese and foreign banks, the comprehensive opening of Chinese finance market is not only a chance, but also a challenge as well. Shanghai, with the even further opening of Chinese market, is more and more becoming an international center for banking industry. This paper, based on the historical data for Chinese and foreign banks in Shanghai from 2002 to 2006, will give detailed description and analysis of actuality for both, which include the comparison of structure, management, business, customers, HR, and etc. Actually, either local bank or foreign bank has its own advantage. Only with fair financial environment for each other, can the mechanism of market competition play its role well. For local Chinese banks, the only way to survive the competition is to set up further strategy, make improvement to be more competent, and take active actions. Thus, the whole banking industry of Shanghai will improve its competence.
