A Study On The History Of Ningbo Early-modern City Planning: 1844-1949

Ningbo City is located in the East China Sea,and is an important port of Zhejiang province.Since 1844,Ningbo City which is one of the five opening-port citys,attracts attention of the colonists because of its special geographic position.The change happens in each aspect such as politics,economic and culture when the city is invaded.And the city nature changed from a Chinese traditional city to a modern capitalism harbor city.Based on the rich and accurate historical material,this thesis is aimed at the development of the Ningbo early-modern City planning and construction,and discusses the 5 main historical stages of the Ningbo City planning development in early-modem time,according to characteristics of the Ningbo City polities,economic developments,construction and city planning.Those stages are:the development of new urban district and initial step of city modernize(1844-1920),renovation of old city and municipal construction(1920-1931),the construction of Ningbo port(1931-1937),a standstill of city planning and construction in the war(1937-1945),the recovery of city planning (1945-1949).This thesis is divided into 7 chapters.The Chapter 1 is the introduction,which describes the origin,the significance,the object and content,the method,the research framework and the present condition of research about this study oversea and in China.The purpose of the introduction is to offer a theoretical background of this thesis.The main body of the thesis is from Chapter 2 to 6.In these chapters,it introduces the city construction and planning of Ningbo at ancient time.Ningbo City developed about one thousand years from ancient Mingzhou City to Ningbo City of the Qing Dynasty.The old city is not beyond the scope of city-wall although it is always developing but only a slow and continuous state.The city function was main of politics,with commercial port.And then explains the content of historical stages of city planning.After about a century of modern city development and construction,Ningbo City became a modern-ship harbor city from a traditional one.The city shape also became a opening and three-centers city from a closed City with thousands years,which never happened in last years.Next describes the relations between early-modern port and city construction and analyzes the causes of the early-modern city planning and construction,at last concludes the characteristics of Ningbo City planning.The last chapter is a summing-up of this paper and review about the research of early-modern city planning of Ningbo City,and previews the after studying.The paper purposes to gain an revelation from the study,provides a reference for Chinese city planning and old city renovation in new period.
