This study is to study the characteristics and changes of urban network structure of Yanbian area by analyzing its road network structure as well as the passenger and freight flow in this area.Road is the essential traffic means for the whole area Although the formation and development of urban network not solely depend on transportation network, analyzing the characteristics of the transportation network and the passenger and freight flow among the cities will help to know about the evolution and development rules of the urban spatial structure with the absence of other unattainable "flow" data.By comprehensive use of literature, matrix analytical method, GIS space analytical method and topology analysis, the writer studied the static and dynamic characteristics of urban network structure. Matrix analytical method is applied to analyze the accessibility of urban network; topology method to analyze connectivity of urban network; the GIS space analytical method is used in the all data processing and map analysis. The conclusions of this study are summarized as follows:Firstly, on the whole, the scale of urban structure of Yanbian area shapes like a pyramid. And the urban rank size rule approaches primate distribution. Because of geographical location, economy, politics, etc., the density of population and cities in the southeast is higher than the northwestSecondly, the road network of Yanbian area covers almost every county. Mostly the east-west national roads are main lines, spreading as a trunk road network. Since China's reform and open policy in 1978, the development of road network in Yanbian area has realized the processes of expansion of space and contraction of time. The construction of new roads has prompted the expansion in space and strengthened the connections among the cities, but the change is not evident The development of road network mostly lies in the contraction of time. The higher is the average speed of roads, the more passengers and freight flow, while improving the accessibility among the cities.Thirdly, the linkage level among cities in Yanbian area is changing form spinal to grid. On the basis of accessibility analysis of the shortest distance and shortest running time, it can be claimed that, with Yanji city as its center, central Yanbian area shows that the highest level of accessibility and it declines toward periphery areas.Fourthly, by comparing the connection intensity of this region in 1998 and in 2007, it shows that Yanji City and Dunhua City stand out as core centers and forms a radiate distribution network with the surrounding cities and towns. As for the number of passenger cars, most of moving patterns concentrate on Yanji city, especially for second moving patterns, the center status of Yanji city is distinct On the whole, the center status of Yanji city is rising step by step while the status of Dunhua City is slipping gradually.Fifthly, studying the connection between road network and the development of city by diagrammitizing, the writer concluded that the development of urbanization is proportional to the development of road network. The development of city and road is supplemental to each other. The development of city always changes; meanwhile, the road and spatial structure also go through staggered transformation. It is the comprehensive characteristic attributed by geographic environment, economy, correlative policy and other aspects in one period. This study is devoted to presenting the characteristics of urban network and connections among cities in Yanbian area. However, with limited data resources, the paper only includes road transportation, and the analysis of the process of city development is limited to population and economy and their corresponding characteristics.
